SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (AP) -Oakland Athletics designated hitter Frank Thomas has been told to back off all baseball activities while he recovers from right quadriceps tendinitis.
The A’s 40-year-old slugger, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 28, had hoped to rejoin Oakland next week but those plans were put on hold after Thomas showed little progress in his rehabilitation.
“It’ll take a little more time four him to heal than we originally thought,” A’s manager Bob Geren said prior to Friday night’s game in San Francisco. “That’s kind of bad news.”
Thomas injured his right leg while trying to stretch on May 27th, his 40th birthday. A subsequent MRI exam revealed a strain and inflammation in the area just above the knee where it connects to the quadriceps muscle.
The Big Hurt was told by team trainers not to do any baseball activities until July 1 and will remain at his home in Las Vegas until then.
Thomas batted .319 with four home runs and 16 RBIs in 28 games with Oakland after being released by Toronto early in the season.
Without Thomas in the lineup, the A’s have struggled to get production out of their DH. In the 14 games since Thomas landed on the DL, Oakland’s designated hitters are batting .138 (8-for-58) with three RBIs.
