PHOENIX (AP) -The Arizona Diamondbacks optioned heralded right-hander Max Scherzer to Triple-A Tucson before Friday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals.
Scherzer, the Diamondbacks’ top pick in the 2006 amateur draft, was 0-2 with a 2.90 ERA in 10 appearances, including three starts, for Arizona. The 23-year-old walked 14 and struck out 33 in 31 innings.
Scherzer was recalled from Tucson on April 27 and was inserted in the rotation after making just 21 career minor league starts. He shifted to the bullpen in early May when right-hander Doug Davis returned following surgery for thyroid cancer.
The Diamondbacks recalled Billy Buckner from Tucson. The right-hander had made 14 starts for the Sidewinders, posting a 4-5 record and 4.48 ERA with 32 walks and 44 strikeouts in 80 1-3 innings.
Arizona manager Bob Melvin said the change was made because the Diamondbacks are in need of relievers who can pitch in consecutive games. Scherzer has not pitched in consecutive games during his brief professional career.
