TORONTO (AP) -Blue Jays outfielder Shannon Stewart was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a sprained right ankle, and outfielder Joe Inglett was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to take his place on the roster.
Brad Wilkerson, who started in left field Sunday, is expected to get the bulk of the playing time in Stewart’s absence.
Stewart is batting .240 with one homer and 14 RBIs in 52 games. He was injured running out a grounder in the first inning of Saturday’s 9-5 defeat to Baltimore. Third baseman Aubrey Huff threw high and wide to first on the play and Stewart ducked to try to avoid the tag, but rolled his ankle on the side of the base and went down in pain. He stayed down and was treated by trainer George Poulis before walking gingerly off the field.
“It’s a pretty serious sprain,” manager John Gibbons said. “It’s in the high ankle, and those are usually the worst.”
Inglett had been optioned to Syracuse before Saturday’s game when Vernon Wells was activated off the DL, but was told to stay around following Stewart’s injury and was soon back on the roster. This is his fourth stint with the Blue Jays this season. He’s batting .281 with no homers and six RBIs in 33 games.
