ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays have celebrated the life of senior adviser Don Zimmer during a pregame ceremony.
Zimmer died Wednesday at 83 in a hospital in nearby Dunedin. He had been in a rehabilitation center since having seven hours of heart surgery in mid-April. There is no funeral or other memorial service planned.
Baseball dignitaries present for Saturday's tribute included Joe Torre, Tommy Lasorda and Jim Leyland. More than 20 family members, including Zimmer's wife ''Soot'' - they were married at home plate during a minor league game in 1951 - also attended.
Son Tom Zimmer, a scout with the San Francisco Giants, caught the ceremonial first pitch thrown by granddaughter Whitney Goldstein.
Torre says Zimmer was ''one of a kind'' and ''an institution.''
