WASHINGTON (AP) -Injured Washington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, on the 15-day disabled list with a small tear in his left shoulder, will be re-evaluated Monday but will not receive a cortisone shot.
“Cortisone is helpful with certain injuries with certain players, but we don’t want to mask anything with it,” , general manager Jim Bowden said Saturday. “Our decision is we want to make sure we make the best long-term decision for his health.”
Zimmerman has not played since May 25 and was placed on the disabled list June 3, retroactive to May 26. The injury affects his non-throwing shoulder.
“It doesn’t feel any different because I haven’t done anything in eight days,” Zimmerman said. “We’ll see.”
Zimmerman was hitting .257 with eight home runs and 27 RBIs at the time of the injury.
Bowden stressed the importance of taking a conservative approach with Zimmerman.
“He’s 23 years old, he’s one of our franchise core players (and) we’re going to take care of him the best we can,” Bowden said. “He and I mutually have discussed it and I’m just opposed to the cortisone shot. That doesn’t mean at some point it may not be helpful, but at this point, it doesn’t seem to make much sense.”
