WASHINGTON (AP) -Needing to clear a roster spot in order to recall a starting pitcher, the Washington Nationals released outfielder Rob Mackowiak following Saturday night’s 6-0 loss to the Giants.
The Nationals are expected to recall right-handed pitcher Garrett Mock from Triple-A Columbus on Sunday to make his major league debut against San Francisco. The 25-year-old Mock, acquired in an August 2006 trade from Arizona for Livan Hernandez, is 3-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 11 starts with Columbus.
“We had to make a move (and) it just didn’t work out with Rob from the get-go. … He just never got going for us,” Washington manager Manny Acta said.
Mackowiak hit .132 in 38 games with a home run and four RBIs. He was slowed by an abdominal injury in spring training
“I guess the only thing that bothers me is that when you decided to sign with a team, you were promised more, more at-bats. I understand they have their guys they want to play, so I didn’t do well when I did get in there,” Mackowiak said. “It’s my own fault.”
Mock will take the start of left-hander Odalis Perez, who will miss his regular turn with tendinitis in his throwing shoulder.
