MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -When Adam Loewen returns to the Orioles from the disabled list, he will pitch in relief for the rest of the season.
Manager Dave Trembley said the coaching staff will be able to monitor Loewen’s pitch count more carefully if he is in the bullpen, and that the decision was based on physical issues.
“He’s fine with it,” Trembley said. “He understands. I think he feels comfortable with it because there will be shorter periods that he has to pitch.”
The 24-year old left-hander was placed on the 15-day disabled list April 25 after he reinjured the left elbow that caused him to miss most of the 2007 season. In four starts this year, he’s 0-1 with a 7.85 ERA.
Loewen will start his rehabilitation soon, which will include at least 15 innings in the minor leagues, both starting games and coming out of the bullpen. He is expected to be back with the team in early July.
Trembley said he will decide what bullpen role Loewen will fill when he is close to returning.
