ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -Vicente Padilla was replaced as the Texas Rangers’ starting pitcher against Detroit on Tuesday night because of an irritated right triceps.
John Rheinecker, who had been on the disabled list since the start of the season because of a strained back, was activated and took Padilla’s place. Rheinecker pitched 11 scoreless innings in two rehabilitation starts for Triple-A Oklahoma.
Padilla is 2-8 with a 6.45 ERA this season.
Texas also activated utilityman Jerry Hairston Jr. from the 15-day disabled list, optioned outfielder Nelson Cruz to Oklahoma and designated utilityman Matt Kata for assignment.
Hairston played 23 games for the Rangers, batting .234 with one homer and three RBIs before going on the disabled list on May 17 due to a pinched nerve in his neck.
Cruz hit .188 in 43 games with three homers and 12 RBIs. Kata had a .131 average with two homers and six RBIs in 31 games.
