SAN DIEGO (AP) -San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy moved closer to returning from the disabled list after a successful bullpen session Wednesday.
Peavy, the reigning NL Cy Young winner, threw 45 pitches off the mound in the bullpen before Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs and reported no pain in his strained right elbow.
“I feel good,” Peavy said. “Everything went well and everything is in place.”
Peavy was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 20, retroactive to May 15.
He will be re-evaluated on Thursday. If Peavy gets clearance, he is scheduled to throw on Saturday in either a rehab assignment in the minors or a simulated game at Petco Park.
“In Jake’s case, he’s not that far removed from pitching in a big league game,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “A simulated game will just give him enough feel on his pitches.”
Peavy said he thinks he will be ready to pitch before the completion of the current 10-game homestand, which ends June 12 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“I’m excited about where I am at,” Peavy said. “I feel like I am ready to go.”
Peavy is 4-3 with a 2.91 ERA in nine starts with one complete game.
Peavy pitched off a mound for the first time since his injury on Sunday at San Francisco, throwing 30 pitches. He suffered the injury on May 14 against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Also, San Diego right-hander Mark Prior underwent season-ending surgery on the anterior capsule in his right shoulder on Wednesday.
Prior was attempting a comeback with San Diego after he became a free agent from the Chicago Cubs, who made him the No. 2 overall pick in the 2001 free-agent draft.
Prior had hoped to pitch by May 1 after an extended spring training. He missed the entire 2007 season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in April 2007. Prior made just nine appearances in an injury-filled 2006 season.
Prior has a career record of 42-29 with a 3.51 ERA in 106 starts.
