DETROIT (AP) -Demolition equipment has arrived at Tiger Stadium ahead of the historic ballpark’s expected demise.
Several vehicles arrived Wednesday at the site in the Corktown neighborhood.
Detroit Economic Growth Corp. spokesman Robert Rossbach says a joint venture of two Detroit-area companies has been authorized to begin demolition when ready. He said work may begin as early as Monday.
Tiger Stadium opened in 1912 as Navin Field. The Tigers departed for nearby Comerica Park after the 1999 season.
Much of the downtown stadium was demolished last year. But a section stretching from dugout to dugout was spared while a nonprofit group tried to raise money to redevelop and preserve the remaining structure.
The city decided Tuesday to level the building.
