ST. LOUIS (AP) -The St. Louis Cardinals optioned Chris Duncan, who has been struggling in the outfield and at the plate, to Triple-A Memphis and called up outfielder Joe Mather on Friday.
Duncan drove in two runs with a single in the first inning to lead St. Louis to a 3-2 win over Houston on Thursday night. Duncan went 1-for-3, but is batting .213 this month and .252 with four home runs for the season.
The 25-year-old Mather is batting .315 with 12 home runs and 24 RBIs in 38 games in Memphis. He currently has a six-game hitting streak and hit 10 home runs in May.
Mather was a third round draft selection in 2001 out of Mount Point High School in Arizona. He combined to hit 31 home runs last season between Springfield Double-A and Memphis.
Duncan hit 21 home runs last year and 22 the year before.
