CLEVELAND (AP) -New York pitcher Andy Pettitte left the Yankees’ game against Cleveland because of back stiffness in the sixth inning Friday night.
Manager Joe Girardi and assistant trainer Steve Donahue went to the mound after Pettitte threw a pitch to Jamey Carroll with two runners on base. After a brief discussion, Pettitte jogged to the dugout and was replaced by Alfredo Aceves.
With the Yankees leading 3-0, Pettitte allowed a single to Mark DeRosa and walked Ben Francisco to open the inning. Then Yankees pitching coach Dave Eiland visited the mound. Pettitte then threw two pitches before leaving.
In the fourth inning, Donahue and Girardi both went to the mound to check on Pettitte following a flyout by Francisco. After throwing the pitch, Pettitte bent over with his hands on his knees and seemed to check his landing area on the mound. He stayed in the game without throwing any warmup pitches.
The start of the game was delayed 1 hour, 25 minutes because of rain.
