PITTSBURGH (AP) -Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit has begun strengthening exercises on his broken right wrist and can catch for pitchers in the bullpen, but is not yet close to returning.
Doumit’s progress will be evaluated after he undergoes another CT scan in three to four weeks. He is not expected to return until late June, as was anticipated after Doumit was hurt while batting against Atlanta on April 19.
A CT scan performed this week showed that Doumit’s wrist is beginning to heal, but he is not yet allowed to swing a bat or throw.
Right-handed reliever Craig Hansen has been told not to throw for up to four weeks following tests that showed an inflamed nerve in a neck muscle. Hansen went on the disabled list April 25 with neck spasms.
