ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -The Los Angeles Angels placed struggling reliever Scot Shields on the 15-day disabled list after Tuesday night’s 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox because of patella tendinitis in his left knee.
Shields relieved starter Joe Saunders in the seventh inning and faced two batters, walking Alexei Ramirez and retiring Jermaine Dye on a grounder to first base. But the right-hander had to cover the bag on the play, and he was subsequently lifted by manager Mike Scioscia.
Shields, whose 42 wins as a reliever are the most in franchise history, has given up runs in eight of his 20 appearances, and has been charged with three losses and three blown saves.
Reliever Rich Thompson will be recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday.
