DETROIT (AP) -Detroit Tigers second baseman Placido Polanco was out of the starting lineup for Sunday night’s game against the Cleveland Indians because of a strained oblique.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Polanco, who left Saturday’s loss to the Indians with the injury, could have started if the game had been later in the season.
“I’m just not going to take a chance with him right now,” Leyland said Sunday. “We’ve had guys dropping like flies recently, so there’s no sense risking another one.”
Polanco is hitting .326 with a homer and 26 RBIs and is among league leaders with a .447 batting average with runners in scoring position.
