NEW YORK (AP) -The Marlins optioned right-hander Eulogio De La Cruz to Triple-A Albuquerque on Monday and purchased the contract of veteran reliever Joe Nelson.
Nelson was 1-1 with a 2.10 ERA and 11 saves at Albuquerque.
“We could use him as a long man, in the middle innings. We can use him anywhere,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said before his team began an 11-game trip against the Mets.
De La Cruz, recalled Sunday to pitch the second game of a doubleheader against the Giants, gave up two runs and two hits while walking four in his first career start. He left after three innings and 65 pitches.
Outfielder Brett Carroll, put on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a right shoulder sprain, won’t do any throwing for two weeks. Alejandro De Aza (ankle sprain) was transferred to the 60-day DL.
