MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Joe Mauer is taking his first day off in two weeks.
The Minnesota catcher is hitting .438 and averaging a home run for every eight at-bats, but Twins manager Ron Gardenhire gave Mauer a needed rest for Monday’s game against Boston.
Mauer was hit by a pitch on the right wrist in Sunday night’s game against Milwaukee, but this rest was more about general soreness from catching. Minnesota is in a stretch of 20 games without a day off, with the next break on June 1.
Since coming off the disabled list on May 1, Mauer has either been the catcher or the designated hitter in all but two games.
Third baseman Joe Crede was also on the bench against the Red Sox. Crede was also hit by a pitch Sunday, and his right hand was still swollen.
