CHICAGO (AP) -Pittsburgh Pirates closer Matt Capps was struck on his pitching elbow by a line drive Monday night and taken to a hospital for X-rays.
After Geovany Soto’s shot up the middle hit Capps with one out in the ninth inning, the 25-year-old right-hander experienced some numbness and tingling. Although Capps said his range of motion was better by the end of the game, the team’s medical staff still sent him to the hospital. The Pirates said results of the X-rays would not be made public until Tuesday.
Sean Burnett relieved Capps and got the final two outs to preserve Pittsburgh’s 10-8 victory.
Capps, who has converted all nine of his save attempts, was coming off his most dominant outing of the season. He struck out the side Sunday to preserve a 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
