CINCINNATI (AP) -Ken Griffey Jr. hit the 574th homer of his career in the sixth inning Friday night, moving the Cincinnati Reds outfielder one ahead of Harmon Killebrew for eighth place on the career list.
Griffey’s solo shot off left-hander Paul Maholm was his 10th in May, the most in the majors. Griffey has 129 career homers in May, his highest total in any month.
Mark McGwire is seventh on the home run list with 583 homers.
The 37-year-old Griffey has 11 homers overall, one behind Adam Dunn for the team lead. Griffey got off to a slow start this year, missing most of spring training because he was still recovering from a broken left hand. He has been slowed during the season by an inflamed digestive tract and inflammation around his lungs.
Griffey drove a 1-1 pitch from Maholm into the Pirates’ bullpen in right field, his first career homer off the left-hander. Maholm is the 366th pitcher to give up a homer by Griffey.
