ST. LOUIS (AP) -The St. Louis Cardinals activated Rick Ankiel from the 15-day disabled list Sunday, reversing course from a day earlier after the outfielder had a strong workout.
He was batting fifth against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday after convincing manager Tony La Russa he could play. La Russa had been targeting Monday for Ankiel’s return.
Ankiel had been on the DL since May 4 after a headfirst crash into the wall while making a running catch. He suffered a bruised right shoulder and soreness.
Infielder Tyler Greene was optioned to Triple-A Memphis. Greene, who saw playing time at shortstop in place of Khalil Greene, batted .263 with two homers and four RBIs in 38 at-bats.
