SEATTLE (AP) -Ken Griffey Jr. was out of the Mariners’ lineup, missing out on a chance to face his former teammate Randy Johnson as he goes for win No. 299.
Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu called it a tough decision to leave Griffey out of the lineup against the San Francisco Giants on Friday night, but said he wanted to get sporadically used veteran Mike Sweeney a second consecutive start against a left-handed pitcher.
He added he has an entire team to consider beyond the potential theater of a Griffey vs. Johnson matchup.
The former teammates have not been on the same field in Seattle since the summer of 1999, days after Safeco Field opened.
Wakamatsu said the left-handed Griffey will start the final two games of the series, including on Sunday against left-hander Barry Zito.
