A look at what’s happening all around the major leagues Friday:
—
FUTURES GAME
Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard (1-1, 3.18 ERA) makes his third major league start opposite budding Pittsburgh ace Gerrit Cole (5-2, 2.40) in a juicy matchup of hard-throwing youngsters with high expectations. ”I’ve never spoken to the guy before in my life, but I’ve heard he’s an incredible pitcher and he’s fun to watch,” Syndergaard said. ”It will be exciting.”
TRY AGAIN
Dan Jennings makes another attempt at earning his first win as a big league manager when Miami hosts Baltimore. The Marlins are 0-4 since he moved from the general manager’s office to the dugout. It’s the worst start by a first-time skipper in the majors since Tony DeFrancesco opened 0-4 after taking over the Astros in 2012, according to STATS.
PLAUDITS FOR PAUL
The White Sox will be honoring Paul Konerko this weekend at U.S. Cellular Field. The 39-year-old Konerko retired after last season, his 16th with Chicago. He is the team’s career leader in total bases and was a key member of the 2005 World Series champions. His No. 14 will be retired Saturday before a game against Minnesota.
NOT YOU AGAIN
The Padres will once again try to solve Zack Greinke when they see him at Dodger Stadium. The former Cy Young Award winner is 5-0 with a 1.58 ERA in nine career starts vs. San Diego. He’s thrown 13 innings against them this season, allowing just one earned run. Greinke might need to pitch a shutout – the Dodgers have blanked in 31 straight innings.
BACK TO BOSTON
Angels righty Garrett Richards will face the Red Sox at Fenway Park, his first start in Boston since suffering a torn tendon in his left knee last August.
