HOUSTON (AP) -Houston Astros first baseman Lance Berkman and manager Cecil Cooper were ejected in the fifth inning of Thursday night’s game against Milwaukee for arguing a close call at home plate.
With the Astros leading 3-1, Berkman singled with two outs, advanced on Carlos Lee’s walk, then raced home on Hunter Pence’s single to left. Catcher Jason Kendall caught left fielder’s Ryan Braun throw and tagged Berkman as he slid, touching the plate with his left hand.
Home plate umpire Delfin Colon made the out call and Berkman started jumping and screaming in his face. Cooper ran out of the dugout, pushed Berkman away and started yelling at Colon. Both were ejected.
Berkman was tossed from a game for the first time since June 8, 2007. Cooper was last ejected on April 25 for arguing balls and strikes in a 9-8 loss to Milwaukee.
Darin Erstad replaced Berkman at first base.
