BOSTON (AP) -David Ortiz’s record homerless streak is over.
The Red Sox designated hitter hit a two-run homer to straightaway center in the fifth inning Wednesday night against Toronto, his first home run in 149 at-bats – the longest drought of his career – including 135 this season.
Ortiz grounded weakly to first base and struck out on three pitches in his previous two at-bats against the Blue Jays, dropping his batting average to .200. Then he hit a two-run homer off Brett Cecil, one of four homers Boston had off the rookie in the fifth.
After crossing the plate, Ortiz was hugged by Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis, then paused and clapped his hands once. In the dugout, he was embraced by manager Terry Francona before stepping out of the dugout and waving his upraised left arm to the cheering fans.
