ST. LOUIS (AP) -Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella criticized slumping Mike Fontenot Tuesday, but says he is sticking with him for now.
Fontenot, mired in a 1-for-19 slump with three RBIs the last nine games, was hitting sixth against the Cardinals. An easy groundout to end the second made it 1 for 20.
Piniella called Fontenot’s at-bats worrisome and says he and batting coach Gerald Perry are working with the infielder, emphasizing that he’s balanced at the plate.
The 28-year-old Fontenot hit .305 last year with nine homers and 40 RBIs in 240 at-bats and began the year as the starting second baseman after Mark DeRosa was traded to the Indians. He’s been starting at third base since Aramis Ramirez went on the 15-day disabled list on May 9.
