SAN DIEGO (AP) -Reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy could be headed for the disabled list due to soreness in his pitching elbow.
The San Diego Padres’ ace, who felt discomfort in his right elbow the last three or four starts, had an MRI exam on Monday. Manager Bud Black said he and general manager Kevin Towers planned to meet with Peavy and the medical staff shortly before Monday night’s game against St. Louis.
“In this case, I’d say more than likely Jake could be missing more than one start,” Black said. “I’ll be much better equipped to answer these questions after the game.”
Peavy had been scheduled to start Monday night but was scratched on Sunday.
Peavy said then that it was “not like a normal soreness. … Your arm is sore all the time, but I do feel some of it in the elbow (and) that’s always a cause for concern. We don’t know how big, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.”
Peavy (4-3, 2.91 ERA), has lost three of his last four decisions. He hasn’t pitched beyond the sixth in any of his last three starts, and lasted just four innings last Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs.
“In this case, Jake got to the point in his last couple of starts where he felt it was impacting his ability to make pitches,” Black said. “When that happens, you have to take a step back, miss a start or two and then regroup, let the muscles or whatever’s causing the problem, calm down, then go through the regimen to heal, then get back on the mound.”
Peavy was the unanimous winner of last year’s NL Cy Young Award after leading the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts – pitching’s version of a Triple Crown.
He went 19-6 while topping the majors in ERA (2.54) and strikeouts (240) for the Padres, who came within one win of their third consecutive playoff berth.
The Padres went into Monday night’s game with the worst record in the majors, 16-29.
