DETROIT (AP) -The Detroit Tigers say right-hander Juan Rincon has chosen free agency over an outright assignment.
The team announced Rincon’s decision on Monday, a week after Dontrelle Willis took his spot on the roster. Rincon had a 5.23 ERA in 10 games.
He signed a minor league contract with the Tigers last winter. The reliever was 3-3 last year with a 5.86 ERA in 47 appearances for Minnesota and Cleveland.
He is 32-27 with a 3.84 ERA since making his debut the Twins in 2001. Minnesota designated him for assignment last June, leading to him becoming a free agent. He landed with the Indians after signing a minor league contract.
Rincon’s best season was 2004, when he was 11-6 with a 2.63 ERA in 77 games.
