ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -Houston manager Cecil Cooper said there was miscommunication about sending Astros ace Roy Oswalt to pitch the seventh inning – which is when he left the game Saturday night with a hip injury against Texas.
Oswalt said after Saturday’s game he told coaches after the sixth that he didn’t think he could pitch any longer, but he was sent out in the seventh anyway.
The Astros ace reiterated those comments before Sunday’s game against the Rangers. Cooper said he planned to meet with Oswalt.
“It’s a misunderstanding,” Cooper said. “We just want to make sure we’re all on the right page,”
When asked Sunday if everything was fine with the decision to pitch the seventh, Oswalt responded: “Yeah.”
Oswalt said he’s unsure about making his next scheduled start Thursday against Philadelphia.
“In two or three days I’ll throw a little bit and see how it feels,” Oswalt said. “I don’t know (about the next start). All I know is today I can’t pitch.”
Oswalt, 4-4 with a 5.43 ERA in 10 starts, allowed consecutive singles to open the seventh. After throwing two more pitches, Oswalt signaled for the medical staff and left the game.
