 NEW YORK (AP) -The Mets placed veteran outfielder Moises Alou on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left quadriceps after New York's 8-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night.
The team called up Jason Vargas to start Thursday against the Cubs. The 24-year-old lefty is 2-3 with a 5.30 ERA at Triple-A New Orleans, but is 0-4 with an ERA over 9.00 in his last four outings.
The Alou move is retroactive to May 13. He is hitting .318 with two homers and 13 RBIs, but is going on the DL for the 15th time in his career.
Vargas has pitched in parts of the last two seasons for Florida. Last year, he was in 12 games, including five starts, going 1-2 with a 7.33 ERA. He joined the Mets last November in the trade that sent Henry Owens and Matt Lindstrom to the Marlins. Vargas and lefty Adam Bostick were sent to New York.
``He's been so-so,'' Randolph said, noting that Vargas pitched very well this spring.
Shortstop Jose Reyes, who left the game in the eighth inning with a slight tightness in his left hamstring, said after the game he was fine and that he would play Thursday's day game.
Reyes said he hurt himself on the first swing of his at-bat in the eighth.
``I felt a little cramp, no big deal,'' he said. ``I've had so many injuries to my hamstring before, I just have to be careful.''
Randolph was noncommittal about whether Reyes would play Thursday.
``We'll see how he feels tomorrow,'' Randolph said.
