NEW YORK (AP) -Yankees reliever Brian Bruney is scheduled to make a rehab appearance with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday and could be activated before Tuesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.
Bruney went on the disabled list last month with a strained muscle in his right elbow. He threw 35 pitches Friday in his second bullpen session and is itching to get back.
“Anytime you have a strained muscle, it’s slow because you can’t do anything,” he said before the Yankees hosted the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. “I feel good. It feels as good as it could right now.”
The Yankees plan to have Bruney follow right-hander Chien-Ming Wang, who is slated to make his second rehab start. But manager Joe Girardi said the club wants Bruney to start the inning on the mound.
Wang, on the DL with weakness in the abductor muscles in his hips, allowed three hits in six scoreless innings in his first rehab start Tuesday.
improve on his last start and he forces our hand,” Girardi said.
Outfielder Xavier Nady, who went on the DL on April 16 with an injured ligament in his right elbow, hit off a tee and soft-tossed before Saturday’s game. Girardi said if everything goes well Nady could begin a rehab assignment at the Yankees’ facility in Tampa, Fla., when the club finishes its 10-game homestand May 24.
