ST. LOUIS (AP) -Chris Carpenter has thrown an extended bullpen session and could return to the St. Louis Cardinals soon.
Carpenter strained a muscle in his left rib cage April 14. Mitchell Boggs, who had been filling in for Carpenter in the rotation, was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Friday but it’ll probably be another week before the Cardinals ace reclaims his spot.
Boggs was 1-0 with a 3.22 ERA, although he failed to get out of the fifth in his last two starts.
St. Louis activated infielder Brendan Ryan from the 15-day disabled list before its game against Milwaukee. Ryan had been sidelined with a hamstring injury.
The Cardinals returned to 12 pitchers and 13 position players after recently completing a stretch of 20 games without a day off.
