MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected in the seventh inning of the series finale Thursday against Detroit by plate umpire Paul Nauert.
Gardenhire came out to argue after Twins batter Michael Cuddyer claimed he was hit on the sleeve by a pitch from reliever Zach Miner. Nauert ruled that the pitch did not hit Cuddyer, and TV replays didn’t show any contact.
But Cuddyer immediately reacted as if he were hit, dropping his bat and getting ready to go to first. Gardenhire came out and vehemently argued for a bit before Nauert finally gave him the boot for the first time this season – the 42nd of his eight-year managerial career.
“There’s no way he reacts like that, if it doesn’t,” Gardenhire said. “I know that for a fact with Michael Cuddyer.”
Said Cuddyer: “I think a lot of people heard it. Unfortunately the umpire didn’t.”
