TORONTO (AP) -The Blue Jays activated closer B.J. Ryan off the 15-day disabled list following Thursday’s 3-2 loss to the New York Yankees.
Ryan, out since April 23 with muscle tightness in his back and shoulder, is 1-0 with a 11.12 ERA and two saves in four chances.
Ryan, in the fourth year of a five-year, $47-million contract, won’t immediately return to the closer’s role. Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said Tuesday that lefty Scott Downs, who is perfect in three save chances since Ryan went down, will continue to work the ninth.
Ryan was activated after pitching in two rehab outings with Class-A Dunedin this week.
“He got 89 (miles per hour) somewhere there and it looked like he had good command,” manager Cito Gaston said. “You can’t keep him away forever. Hopefully he can come back and help us.”
Toronto optioned left-hander Bill Murphy to Triple-A Las Vegas. He went 0-0 with a 3.18 ERA in eight games for the Blue Jays.
