MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -The Detroit Tigers optioned right-handed reliever Aquilino Lopez to Triple-A Toledo after the game at Minnesota on Saturday, making room for Virgil Vasquez, who is scheduled to start Sunday.
The Tigers planned to officially recall Vasquez from Toledo before the game Sunday. He is filling in for right-hander Jeremy Bonderman, who has a cut on the middle finger of his pitching hand.
Vasquez will likely make only one start. Though he didn’t speculate what it would be, manager Jim Leyland said another roster move would probably be made after Sunday’s game.
Lopez pitched three scoreless innings and was credited with a save in the Tigers’ 8-2 win over the Twins on Saturday. He has a 5.06 ERA in 10 2-3 innings over five appearances.
Vasquez is 4-2 in seven starts with a team-best 2.88 ERA at Toledo.
