ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -Reliever Justin Speier was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday because of what the team called a medical condition unrelated to baseball.
Speier wasn’t at Saturday’s game against the Chicago White Sox, but returned Sunday and said he had flu-like symptoms. He said at that time he was getting better and hoped to be available to pitch in the near future.
To replace Speier on their 25-man roster, the Angels recalled infielder Kendry Morales from Triple-A Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League.
Speier, a 33-year-old right-hander who signed a four-year, $18 million free-agent contract during the offseason, is 0-0 with a 1.69 ERA in 15 games with the Angels. He has allowed only seven hits in 16 innings while walking five and striking out 17.
The 23-year-old Morales was hitting .287 with one homer and 10 RBIs in 23 games for Salt Lake. He appeared in two games for the Angels last month, getting two hits in five at-bats.
