A look at what’s happening all around the major leagues today:
—
ON A ROLL
Houston Astros right-hander Collin McHugh (4-0) faces the Los Angeles Angels in the opener of a four-game series. McHugh has won his last 11 decisions dating to August 2014 and would tie a franchise record by winning his next one.
PUIG TO DH
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig, on the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring injury, is expected to be the DH for Class A Rancho Cucamonga against Visalia. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly watched video Wednesday of Puig running. ”It’s evidence that he ran today and ran hard,” Mattingly said.
LOOKING FOR NO. 1
AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber (0-4, 4.62 ERA) tries to get going when he pitches for the Cleveland Indians in their series finale against Kansas City. Kluber lost to the Royals on April 27.
BAD LUCK BURNETT
Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett tries again for his first win of the season when he starts the finale of a three-game series against visiting Cincinnati. Burnett is 0-1 in five starts despite a 1.45 ERA that ranks second in the NL. He has also allowed no more than one run in four straight starts for the first time in his 17-year career. Pittsburgh has lost five in a row.
FINGERS CROSSED
The Tampa Bay Rays expect to learn more about Alex Cobb’s arm injury after returning to Florida for an eight-game homestand. Cobb hasn’t pitched this season, and his rehab program was stopped. The Tampa Bay Times reported this week that he has a partial ligament tear in his elbow. The newspaper said Cobb will try to pitch through it after receiving platelet-rich plasma therapy. If that is unsuccessful, he would need Tommy John surgery, according to the report.
FISH LOVER
San Francisco Giants right-hander Tim Hudson, coming off his first win of the season in his fifth start, looks to improve on his 15-4 career mark against the Marlins in the opener of a four-game series with Miami at AT&T Park. Hudson faced the Marlins regularly with Atlanta and has won his last six starts against them.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
New manager Craig Counsell of the Milwaukee Brewers still owes GM Doug Melvin a report on the team’s Double-A Biloxi affiliate. Counsell, a special assistant to Melvin before replacing fired manager Ron Roenicke on Monday, was watching Biloxi play in Pensacola last week. ”There was stuff that I didn’t finish that I haven’t addressed yet and I don’t think I’m going to, to be honest with you,” Counsell said. ”It’s kind of low on the priority right now.”
