SAN DIEGO (AP) Colin Rea of the San Diego Padres has lost his no-hit bid with two outs in the seventh inning against the New York Mets.
Yoenis Cespedes grounded a single through the right side for the Mets’ first hit Thursday night. The Padres had shifted three infielders to the left side for Cespedes, and the slugger tapped a single through the vacated spot.
The Padres remain the only big league team without a no-hitter. San Diego played its first game in 1969.
Center fielder Jon Jay had helped preserve the no-hit try with a tremendous sliding catch on the warning track of a flyball by Curtis Granderson for the final out in the third.
The 25-year-old Rea was making his 12th big league start, having made his debut last season. He came in with a 2-1 record.
The Padres lead 5-0.
