BOSTON (AP) -Aaron Laffey is moving to Cleveland’s weak bullpen and will be replaced as Thursday’s starter by Jeremy Sowers.
Indians general manager Mark Shapiro announced the decision before Wednesday night’s opener of a two-game series against the Boston Red Sox. Sowers was expected to be called up from Triple-A Columbus after the game.
Laffey is 2-0 with a 4.09 ERA in four starts, but the Indians began Wednesday with the most blown saves in the AL. All 29 of his regular-season appearances in the majors have been as a starter, but he pitched 4 2-3 scoreless relief innings in the 2007 AL championship series.
Sowers started four games at Columbus with a 1-1 record and a 2.25 ERA.
