PITTSBURGH (AP) -Pittsburgh Pirates closer Matt Capps expects to be sidelined until this weekend because of irritation in his right elbow, a problem that apparently developed during two successive poor outings.
No ligament or other structural damage was found during an examination of Capps’ elbow on Tuesday.
Capps converted his first five save opportunities before he failed to hold a one-run lead Monday against Milwaukee. He also allowed two runs on five hits in a non-save situation Saturday against the Reds.
Despite Capps’ ineffectiveness, the Pirates are encouraged because he threw his fastball in the mid-90s mph each night.
“The velocity was still there,” manager John Russell said. “That’s a good sign.”
