CLEVELAND (AP) -Indians left-hander Cliff Lee was activated from the disabled list to make his first start of the season Thursday night against Toronto.
Lee strained a right abdominal muscle in February during a bullpen session in spring training and was placed on the disabled list April 1. He was 14-11 with a 4.40 ERA in 33 starts last season.
As he comes off the DL, Jake Westbrook could be going on it. Westbrook left Wednesday night’s game against the Blue Jays in the second inning with left abdominal tightness.
Cleveland also recalled left-hander Rafael Perez from Buffalo and optioned outfielders Shin-Soo Choo and Ben Francisco to the Triple-A team.
Perez was 1-1 with a 3.74 ERA in three starts and one relief appearance with Buffalo and will be used as a long reliever. Perez has allowed 21 hits and nine earned runs in 21 2-3 innings.
Choo, brought up from Buffalo on April 23, hit .294 (5-for-17) with five RBIs in six games. Francisco was recalled from Buffalo on May 1 and made his major league debut that night.
