MIAMI (AP) -The Florida Marlins placed outfielder Josh Willingham on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 28, with a lower back strain before Friday night’s game against the San Diego Padres.
Willingham was a late scratch for the Marlins’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday, then wound up missing the entire three-game series.
The 29-year-old Willingham was batting .341 with six home runs and 16 RBIs through 25 games, by far his best start to a season. He batted just .265 last year with 21 homers and 89 RBIs.
Outfielder Brett Carroll, who was fourth in the Pacific Coast League in batting at .418, was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Carroll had one hit in eight at-bats in four games with the Marlins in early April.
