BOSTON (AP) -Mike Piazza left Oakland’s game against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night after apparently injuring his right shoulder on a slide into third base.
Piazza was on second with two outs in the sixth inning when Bobby Crosby hit a grounder to third baseman Mike Lowell, who raced for the bag. He dove and tagged Piazza, who remained on the ground as Lowell trotted to the dugout. Piazza clutched his right shoulder, then got up and walked to the bench.
Piazza was the designated hitter for the Athletics. His spot in the lineup didn’t come up again until the eighth, when Nick Swisher pinch hit for him and grounded into a double play.
