NEW YORK (AP) The New York Mets scored a team record 12 runs in the third inning to rout San Francisco 13-1 on Friday and stretch their winning streak to seven.
Yoenis Cespedes set a club record with six RBIs in the inning, connecting for a two-run single and then hitting a grand slam homer which capped the scoring burst.
The Mets’ efforts were not enough to take the lead of the National League East division as they remained half a game behind Washington, which won narrowly at St. Louis on the back of a strong pitching performance by Stephen Strasburg.
Baltimore retained its lead in the AL East and built on a peerless home record by downing the Chicago White Sox, and Texas kept its narrow lead in the AL West by defeating the Los Angeles Angels.
The previous Mets record for most runs in an inning was 11, set against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field 10 years ago. Butch Huskey held the previous team mark for RBIs in an inning with five against the Marlins in 1998.
The scoring spree made it an easy night for Steven Matz in the opener of a three-game series between the NL champions of the past two seasons. He tossed six shutout innings to win his third consecutive start.
Washington stayed ahead of the Mets by winning 5-4 at St. Louis.
Stephen Strasburg struck out nine, including seven of eight in one stretch, and issued only one walk to improve to 4-0.
Michael Taylor’s leadoff homer immediately ended a 22-inning scoreless drought for the Nationals, and Danny Espinosa’s first homer of the season was a two-run shot that capped a four-run fourth.
Baltimore’s Nolan Reimold hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the seventh inning, leading the Orioles past the White Sox 6-3.
The White Sox entered the series with a six-game winning streak, but have lost back-to-back games to the Orioles, whose 9-1 mark at Camden Yards is the best home mark in the majors.
Baltimore fell behind in the top of the seventh but Reimold then put the Orioles back in the lead when he hit Carlos Rodon’s first pitch over the right-field scoreboard in the bottom of the inning.
Texas’ Ian Desmond continued his batting surge with two hits, including the go-ahead double in a three-run sixth inning, as the Rangers beat the Angels 4-2.
Desmond doubled past third baseman Yunel Escobar’s backhand fielding attempt as Texas scored three times with two out. He’s hitting .394 in his past 10 games after hitting .091 in his first 12.
The win kept the AL West-leading Rangers half a game ahead of Seattle, which shut out Kansas City 1-0.
Felix Hernandez tied Jamie Moyer’s franchise record for career victories at 145. He worked 7-2/3 scoreless innings and threw a season-high 118 pitches.
The Mariners had only one hit for the game, but Seth Smith’s solo homer leading off the sixth proved enough.
Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard led off the 11th inning with a home run to lift the Phillies past Cleveland 4-3 and to their seventh win in eight games.
Howard’s homer off Cody Allen (0-3) was his fifth of the season and sixth career game-ending shot.
Pittsburgh notched a fifth successive win by downing Cincinnati 4-1.
Juan Nicasio had eight strikeouts and only one walk in seven innings. Signed as a free agent in the offseason, Nicasio has won all three home starts with a 1.89 ERA while losing both road starts with a 6.75 ERA.
Josh Harrison hit his first home run in 50 weeks – a span of 379 at-bats – with two outs in the fourth and Matt Joyce sliced a two-run home run off the foul pole in left in the seventh inning to make it 4-0.
The Reds have lost five straight.
Chicago’s Matt Szczur hit his first career grand slam during a five-run eighth inning as the Cubs broke away to beat Atlanta 6-1.
Colorado’s Trevor Story tied a rookie record with his 10th homer in April, a two-run shot, and the Rockies hit four home runs in all to beat Arizona 9-0.
Boston’s David Ortiz hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning to give the Red Sox a 4-2 win against the New York Yankees.
Toronto’s Michael Saunders hit two home runs to power the Blue Jays to a 6-1 victory over Tampa Bay.
San Diego ended a run of five straight losses by winning 5-1 at the Los Angeles Dodgers as Matt Kemp hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the eighth inning against his former team.
Miami’s Adam Conley was lifted after 116 pitches despite giving up no hits in his 7 2/3 innings, steering the Marlins toward a 6-3 victory over Milwaukee.
Minnesota’s Michael Fulmer won his major league pitching debut as the Tigers beat Minnesota 9-2.
Oakland’s Yonder Alonso hit a game-winning three-run homer as the Athletics defeated Houston 7-4.
