BALTIMORE (AP) Baltimore’s Manny Machado had a grand slam and a career-high five RBIs, helping the Orioles beat the Chicago White Sox 10-2 in Thursday’s clash of American League divisional leaders, ending Chicago’s six-game winning streak.
The result opened the Orioles’ lead in the AL East to 1-1/2 games while Chicago advantage in the AL Central was trimmed to a still healthy three games.
It was a different story for the White Sox crosstown rival, the Cubs, who beat Milwaukee, while Philadelphia produced a shutout to sweep Washington and a commanding Rubby de la Rosa pitched Arizona past St. Louis.
Baltimore’s Machado stopped an 0-for-17 batting slump with an RBI double in a four-run third inning, and hit his four-run shot in the sixth.
Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo hit consecutive third-inning homers for the Orioles, who are 8-1 at Camden Yards this season.
Philadelphia’s Cameron Rupp hit a tiebreaking, two-run double to end a scoreless stalemate and lead the Phillies to a 3-0 win against Washington.
Odubel Herrera singled opening the ninth and took third base on Freddy Galvis’ double. After an intentional walk, then a strikeout, Rupp hit a drive off Nationals closer Jonathan Papelbon which carried the right-fielder, landing on the warning track.
Four Phillies pitchers combined to shut out Washington, which has not scored in 22 innings across three games.
Chicago Cubs’ ace Jake Arrieta had his long streak of scoreless innings at Wrigley Field ended, but the Cubs still beat Milwaukee 7-2.
Arrieta (5-0) gave up one run in five innings; the first run he allowed at Wrigley Field since July last year. Arrieta had gone 52-2/3 innings without conceding a run on his home field, just four outs shy of the big league record.
At 16-5, Chicago is off to its best 21-game start since 1907.
Arizona’s Rubby De La Rosa struck out a career-high 10 and pitched seven scoreless innings to steer the Diamondbacks to a 3-0 win against St. Louis.
De La Rosa had been shaky this year and was demoted to the bullpen for a time but turned in his second straight strong start.
Chris Herrmann opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the second and Brandon Drury hit a solo shot in the fourth.
Detroit’s Anibal Sanchez allowed three hits in 5 2/3 innings, struck out nine but walked seven in a topsy-turvy performance that was enough to lead the Tigers past Oakland 7-3.
Miami completed a four-game road sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers, with Dee Gordon and Martin Prado driving in the tying and go-ahead runs with consecutive singles with two outs in the seventh inning to produce a 5-3 win.
Atlanta ended an eight-game losing slump with a 5-3 win at Boston, led by Nick Markakis who had three singles, a double and three RBIs.
