KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -Zack Greinke’s streak of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run has been stopped at 43.
Toronto’s Vernon Wells hit a two-out RBI single in the first inning off the Kansas City right-hander Wednesday night, scoring Marco Scutaro after he led off with a double.
Greinke and former Los Angeles Dodger great Fernando Valenzuela are the only pitchers since the early 1900s to not allow an earned run through their first four starts of a season. Greinke had not allowed an earned run since Sept. 13, 2008, against Cleveland, a span of six starts.
Grienke struck out the side in the first.
