ATLANTA (AP) – Max Scherzer will not make his scheduled start for Washington against Atlanta on Tuesday night because of a sprained right thumb.
Manager Matt Williams says Scherzer may be ready to start ”before another five days.”
Scherzer jammed the thumb while batting against St. Louis on Thursday. He couldn’t throw in the bullpen as scheduled on Sunday.
Williams says he won’t announce a fill-in starter until after Monday night’s game against the Braves. Williams says right-hander Tanner Roark, who has worked in six games in relief this season, could start but might last only 50 to 60 pitches. Roark started in 31 games last season.
Also, right-hander A.J. Cole could be called up from Triple-A Syracuse.
