CLEVELAND (AP) -Left-hander Jeremy Sowers was recalled from the minor leagues on Saturday to start against the New York Yankees.
Sowers was 0-2 with a 3.18 ERA in four starts at Triple-A Buffalo. He was optioned to the Bisons on March 24 after losing a training camp competition with Cliff Lee for the fifth starting spot.
The 24-year-old Sowers began last season in Cleveland’s rotation, but went 1-6 in 12 starts and was sent back to the minors. He spent the remainder of the 2007 season with Buffalo.
To open a roster spot, the Indians sent outfielder Ben Francisco to Buffalo. He was recalled Tuesday when the Indians placed Jake Westbrook on the disabled list.
