MILWAUKEE (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright hurt his left ankle while stumbling out of the batter’s box and left Saturday night’s game against Milwaukee in the fifth inning.
The Cardinals didn’t detail the severity of Wainwright’s injury. They said he will be re-evaluated back in St. Louis after the team’s road trip ends Sunday.
Wainwright had a 2-0 lead when he had trouble getting out of the box on his popup that led off the inning. He was helped off the field by a trainer.
Wainwright was relieved by Mitch Harris, making his major league debut at the age of 29 after serving five years of active duty in the U.S. Navy following his graduation from the Naval Academy.
