PHOENIX (AP) -Jake Peavy fell one strike short of Tom Seaver's major league record of 10 consecutive strikeouts.
Peavy struck out the side in the second, third and fourth innings of the San Diego Padres' game at the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night.
Eric Byrnes, who began the streak, led off the fifth. With a 2-2 count, Byrnes fouled off a pair of pitches, then checked his swing. First-base umpire Jeff Kellogg ruled he didn't go around, and Byrnes then took ball four, which was outside.
Stephen Drew flied out, and Peavy struck out Carlos Quentin. Following a four-pitch walk to Chris Synder, Peavy fanned pitcher Brandon Webb for his 12th strikeout. Arizona manager Bob Melvin was ejected by plate umpire Mike Reilly after Webb's at-bat began with a called strike.
Seaver set the record for the New York Mets against San Diego on April 22, 1970, when he struck out his final 10 batters - and 19 in all.
Peavy had singled and run the bases in the top of the fifth. His first eight strikeouts in the streak were swinging.
The streak began in the second inning, when Peavy struck out Byrnes, Drew and Quentin.
In the third, Peavy struck out Chris Snyder - who was thrown out at first after catcher Pete Laforest dropped the pitch - Webb and Chris Young. Peavy had fallen behind Young 3-0.
In the fourth, Peavy fanned Alberto Callaspo, Orlando Hudson and Chad Tracy, who was called out.
San Diego's previous record for consecutive strikeouts in a game was six, shared by four pitchers.
