TORONTO (AP) -Rangers right-hander Kris Benson has elbow tendinitis and will get three extra days of rest before his next start, Saturday in Baltimore.
Benson, who signed a minor league contract with Texas in the offseason, is 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two starts. He allowed four runs and six hits in six innings in a 19-6 victory over Baltimore on April 15.
Benson said the tendinitis developed after he pitched on a bad mound during a minor league game in spring training. It grew so bad during his last start that he was unable to throw his cutter, using mainly his fastball.
Left-hander Matt Harrison and right-handers Kevin Millwood and Vicente Padilla will all move up one day, with Harrison starting in Benson’s place Wednesday at Toronto.
The first overall pick in the 1996 draft, Benson has a career record of 69-74 and has also pitched for Pittsburgh, the New York Mets and Baltimore.
He missed the 2001 season after elbow ligament replacement surgery and did not pitch in the major leagues in the 2007 and 2008 seasons following shoulder surgery.
